ACCA
Can I start ACCA without a degree?
Yes. If you do not yet meet ACCA's entry requirements, you can start with ACCA's Foundations in Accountancy route and move across. Graduates may be exempt from some Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams; ACCA's exemptions calculator shows what your qualification earns.
How is the ACCA qualification structured?
Up to 13 exams in three levels: Applied Knowledge (BT, MA, FA), Applied Skills (LW, PM, TX, FR, AA, FM) and Strategic Professional (SBL and SBR plus two options). Levels are taken in order; within a level you can sit the exams in any order.
Which Strategic Professional options should I choose?
You take two of Advanced Financial Management, Advanced Performance Management, Advanced Taxation and Advanced Audit and Assurance. Choose the two closest to the work you do or want to do; HPS lecturers can talk the choice through with you.
When are the ACCA exam sessions?
Session exams run four times a year, in March, June, September and December. BT, MA, FA and the Global and English versions of LW are on demand, so you sit them when you are ready at a registered centre. The ACCA page on this site lists the dates ACCA has published.
How many ACCA exams can I sit in one session?
Up to four exams in a session and eight different exams in a calendar year. HPS recommends two papers per session for students working full time.
What is changing at ACCA in September 2027?
ACCA starts a new qualification. June 2027 is the last sitting of the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams, and from September 2027 students sit the new qualification's exams. Plan your remaining papers around that date; the transition page explains the options.
Can I get exemptions from Strategic Professional exams?
No. Prior qualifications can earn exemptions only from the nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams, each with an exemption fee payable to ACCA.
How long do I have to finish Strategic Professional?
All Strategic Professional exams must be passed within seven years of passing the first one.
What is the Ethics and Professional Skills Module?
About 20 hours of online business simulations that every student must complete for membership. It can be taken at any time after Applied Knowledge, and ACCA strongly advises finishing it before any Strategic Professional exam.
What practical experience does ACCA require?
36 months of supervised experience in a relevant role and nine performance objectives: all five Essentials and four of the 17 Technical objectives, recorded in ACCA's MyExperience and signed off by your supervisor.
What is the pass mark for ACCA exams?
50% in every exam. Each exam page on this site shows the format, duration, marks and exam structure as ACCA publishes them.
Do I register with ACCA through HPS?
No. You register and enter for exams directly with ACCA. HPS provides tuition, practice and, for on-demand papers, the computer-based exam centre. ACCA's own fees are paid to ACCA directly.
What do ACCA's own fees cover?
ACCA charges a registration fee, an annual subscription, an entry fee for each exam and a fee for each exemption. They are separate from HPS tuition fees and are paid to ACCA. The Exam Cost Planner helps you total them for your route.
Which ACCA programmes does HPS teach?
Tuition for the ACCA exams paper by paper, timed mocks in the HPS Exam Room, and ACCA's certificate programmes: Data Analytics, Sustainability for Finance, International Financial Reporting, International Auditing, IPSAS and Public Financial Management.
How close are HPS mocks to the real ACCA exam?
HPS mocks follow each exam's published structure and run in the HPS Exam Room, which behaves like the computer-based exam: a server-kept clock, autosave, flags, a question navigator and a review screen. Every lost mark is explained afterwards.
ICAN
How is the ICAN qualification structured?
15 papers in three levels: Foundation (A1 to A4), Skills (B1 to B6) and Professional (C1 to C5), all compulsory. A level must be completed before you move to the next.
When are the ICAN diets?
Twice a year, in May and November. Entries close one week before the exams, and each diet's advert sets the exact registration window.
How many ICAN papers can I sit in one diet?
Within a level you can enter any number of papers, and each pass is credited on its own. HPS helps you choose a realistic number for the hours you have.
What is the ICAN pass mark?
50% in every paper. Each paper is passed and credited on its own; there is no aggregate pass.
How long are ICAN exams?
Papers run for 3 hours plus 15 minutes' reading time. The Case Study runs for 4 hours including reading time.
Has the ICAN syllabus changed?
Yes. ICAN's 2025 syllabus (updated 2026) is the current one, and HPS courses follow it. Each paper page on this site lists the syllabus areas and the weightings ICAN publishes.
I passed papers under the 2021 syllabus. What happens to them?
They are credited paper by paper: BMF as BE, MI as MA, BL as CBL, AA as AAF, CR as SBR and AAA as AAAF. Corporate Strategic Management and Ethics carries no credit, and candidates who had not completed Skills must sit the new Financial Management paper.
Are ICAN exams computer-based?
Skills and Professional papers are written. The syllabus allows Foundation to be paper-based or computer-based, and ICAN has announced a move to computer-based exams without yet naming the levels or the diet.
Is there a time limit at Professional level?
ICAN's syllabus says Professional must be completed within ten diets, while ICAN's May 2026 advert says a five-year rule from the first credit now applies. Check which applies to your registration with ICAN.
What exemptions does ICAN grant?
Exemptions are granted by academic and professional qualification. ATSWA holders from 2010 are exempt from all Foundation papers plus B2 and B3, and ICAN's Council can exempt a failed paper where a further qualification shows the competence.
What practical experience does ICAN require?
36 months under a training agreement with an ICAN-approved training employer. Up to 12 months of experience gained before registration can count.
What is the ICAN ethics and soft-skills test?
A computer-based test on professional values, ethics and attitudes, with soft skills assessed alongside. You can take it at any time during your studentship, and it is required for membership.
How do I become a chartered accountant with ICAN?
Pass the examinations, the ethics test and the practical experience requirement, with professional development, and ICAN inducts you as an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA).
Do I register with ICAN through HPS?
No. You register and enter for each diet directly with ICAN and pay ICAN's fees to ICAN. HPS provides tuition, practice and mock examinations.
Can I study for ICAN and ACCA together?
Many HPS students complete both. ICAN members can apply for exemptions from several ACCA exams and ACCA members can pursue ICAN membership through ICAN's own routes; the exact exemptions change, so confirm them with each body before you plan around them.
Exam centre
Which exams can I sit at the HPS exam centre?
HPS is registered with ACCA as a computer-based exam centre for the on-demand exams: BT, MA, FA and LW. Use the booking request form to ask for a date.
Can I sit session exams such as FR or SBL at HPS?
Session exams are entered through ACCA's own system, which assigns the centre. The HPS exam centre team can advise you on entry.
Do I have to be an HPS student to book?
No. External candidates are welcome.
How do I book an exam?
Send a booking request with the exam, your preferred and alternative dates and your ACCA registration number. You receive a reference immediately, and the team emails you to confirm the slot, usually within one working day.
How soon can I sit an on-demand exam?
That depends on the slots open at the centre. Give a preferred and an alternative date in your request; the team confirms the earliest suitable slot.
How do I pay for an exam at the centre?
The confirmation email for your slot sets out what is payable and how to pay. Your booking is final once payment is confirmed.
What do I bring on exam day?
Your ACCA registration details and valid photo identification that matches your ACCA record. Nothing else goes into the exam room.
When should I arrive?
Thirty minutes before your slot, so identification checks are finished before the exam starts.
When do I get my result?
Results for on-demand exams are provisional on the day of the exam; ACCA confirms them afterwards.
Is there a limit on re-sits?
No. On-demand exams can be re-sat; book a new slot when you are ready.
Can I change or cancel my booking?
Contact the exam centre team with your booking reference as early as you can. Payments are final once confirmed; where HPS cancels a sitting and cannot offer a suitable alternative, HPS will discuss moving the fee to another sitting.
What are the exam centre's facilities?
Individual workstations, invigilation to ACCA standards and a waiting area for candidates.
Which rules apply in the exam room?
ACCA's examination rules apply, in addition to HPS's terms, and the invigilator explains what may go into the room. Misconduct can be reported to ACCA.
I need an adjustment for my exam. What should I do?
Add it to the notes on your booking request so the team can tell you what the centre can arrange. Formal adjustments for ACCA exams are applied for through ACCA.
Can I practise in exam conditions first?
Yes. The HPS Exam Room runs timed practice that behaves like the computer-based exam, and the free practice tests need no account.
Where is the exam centre?
At the HPS head office, No 4, Lafia Close by UBA Bank, Garki Area 8, Abuja, the same address as classroom tuition.

No. Registration, exam entry, annual subscription and exemption fees are paid by you directly to ACCA or ICAN and follow their own terms.

Timed practice that behaves like the real computer-based exam: a server-kept clock, autosave, flags, a question navigator and a review screen before you submit.
What happens if my connection drops during a timed exam?
Answers save automatically as you work and queue if you go offline. When you reconnect, the platform resumes your attempt with the same server-controlled deadline. If the deadline passes while you are offline, the attempt is submitted with the answers already saved.
Will I see where I lost marks in a mock?
Yes. Each answer is explained, results are broken down by syllabus area, and wrong answers go to your Mistake Vault.
Can I go back to a lesson later?
Yes. Lessons have video, notes and exercises with bookmarks and transcripts, and your position follows you between devices.
How long do I keep access to a course?
For the duration stated on the course page, from the date your enrolment is confirmed.
Can I share my account?
No. Access is personal to the enrolled student, and timed assessments record sign-in details to protect their integrity.
Are the practice questions taken from past exams?
No. HPS writes its own questions to the official syllabus areas. Use ACCA's and ICAN's own specimen and past exams alongside them.
